Sweet freedom! Juniper is finally fully vaccinated and ready for adventures. Her first hike was at Tims Ford State Park, and she loved it—nose to the ground and zoomies at the most inopportune times. We are definitely going to need a long line for this girl.

We started at the visitor center parking lot and took the Lost Creek Overlook Trail to the overlook. This point marks the meeting of the Lost Creek Overlook Trail, Marble Plains Overlook Trail, Marble Plains Spur Trail, and Evans Point Trail.

The Lost Creek Overlook Trail is a 1.35-mile trail with moderate inclines and two suspension bridges. Juniper did not love the suspension bridges the first time we visited Tims Ford. If you are hiking with a group and it’s your pup’s first time crossing a suspension bridge, I recommend having only one person on the bridge with your dog. This helps minimize the bouncing that can happen as you get closer to the opposite side.

The first time we crossed with Juniper, I moved at a slower pace and rewarded her as we went. Since the trail is close to home, we’ve revisited it a few times—and I’m happy to report she now crosses the bridges confidently without hesitation.

The Lost Creek Overlook Trail is natural and can be narrow in places. This can make passing other groups a little awkward, but it’s manageable. Along the way you’ll pass a few scenic viewpoints and a backcountry campsite.

The overlook itself offers a beautiful view and has two wooden benches where you can rest and enjoy the scenery. We used the opportunity to drink some water and have a small snack before heading back.

For the return, we opted to take the Marble Plains Overlook Trail back to the visitor center. This is an easy, paved 1.1-mile trail that follows along the trees and the main park road. The trail is handicap accessible and has a couple of benches along the way, making it a great cool-down walk that leads right back to the visitor center parking lot. On our first visit, we even encountered a group of deer. Juniper was very confused by the “unleashed dogs,” but she handled herself beautifully and everyone moved along with minimal disturbance.

The visitor center is dog-friendly and includes a small gift shop and clean restrooms. Bark Ranger tags are available for purchase in the gift shop. In the past, dog-friendly events have also been held here, so it’s worth checking the events page online before your visit.

Tims Ford has activities for the whole family, including hiking, fishing, boating, biking, and even golfing. Campgrounds and pet-friendly cabins are also available. Be sure to check the website before visiting, as the cabins are currently under renovation.

Overall, Tims Ford is a great place to hike with your adventure pup and enjoy the lake.

Be sure to follow the BARK Ranger principles:
