We got lost…just for a moment.
I expected to pass the visitor center first and then make our way to the trailhead, but we actually drove right past it and had to double back. When you enter Rock Island State Park, the road is narrow and you’ll pass the Historic Cotton Mill and viewpoint first—this will be on your right. Not too far past that, on your left-hand side, is the trailhead for the Collins River Loop Trail. There is also a 0.3-mile connector trail between these two points, which is helpful to keep in mind—especially during busy times when parking may be limited.
Since we arrived early, we were able to park right at the trailhead. This marked our first hike with Juniper over two miles, and she did great. The trail is easy, with just a few short inclines toward the end.
One of my favorite things about hiking is the way the morning sun filters through the trees—and this trail delivered. We made the full loop with ease, accompanied by plenty of squirrel sightings to keep things interesting. This is a simple, peaceful hike—nothing overly challenging or dramatic—and sometimes that’s exactly what your soul needs. I’m already looking forward to coming back in different seasons, so stay tuned for fall and winter updates.
After finishing the trail, we stopped at several overlooks to take in the views, then popped into the visitor center to grab Juniper’s Bark Ranger badge. The visitor center is very small. Keep that in mind if you plan on taking your pup inside with you during peak times.
From there, we headed down to the beach area to enjoy the sand and water. Juniper had her moment—sandy zoomies, a heroic stick rescue, and then a quick realization that Dad could not be trusted after he threw the stick back into the water. Lesson learned: protect the stick at all costs.
After about 20 minutes, we rinsed off and made our way to Mountain Goat Market in Monteagle, TN for lunch. We really enjoy the food and Juniper gets very excited for her pup cup. There are two dog-friendly patios and it is absolutely worth the drive from the park. Mountain Goat Market is also close to Fiery Gizzard State Park.
Important Information for Rock Island State Park
Rock Island State Park shares space with the TVA Powerhouse and Great Falls Dam. It’s very important to check the park website for safety updates and water release schedules before your visit.
At times, the gorge may be closed. If it’s open, always be aware of changing water levels, listen for sirens, and be prepared to move to higher ground quickly if needed. If you plan to enter the gorge, I highly recommend checking in with a ranger at the visitor center first.
