New to our National Park System—or maybe just getting reacquainted? Did you know there’s more to it than the 63 designated national parks?
The National Park Service was officially created in 1916 with the signing of the “Organic Act” by President Woodrow Wilson. It was tasked with preserving and protecting our nation’s parks and monuments for future generations.
Today, the National Park System has grown to include 433 units, covering more than 85 million acres across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. These sites span 19 different designations, including military parks and battlefields, national seashores, scenic trails, and historic sites.
Together, these places help tell the story of our country—educating visitors about our history while encouraging the preservation of our natural landscapes, wildlife, and cultural heritage. Over the years, the National Park Service and partner organizations have also developed programs to inspire education, exploration, and stewardship among the public.
